The Walleye is the premier Minnesota State Fish and one of the most sought-after fish among Minnesota anglers. The fresh waters of Northern Minnesota and its Canadian border lakes offer some of the best walleye fisheries in the world. The walleye is considered to be a great palatable fish and is fished for recreation and in commercial fisheries.

They are often considered to be a nocturnal fish because of their excellent visual acuity under low illumination levels. Generally the best time to fish for walleyes is at dawn and dusk, or on cloudy overcast days. In northern Minnesota and where the water has a darker tint walleyes will feed during the day, but do prefer choppy water conditions, which disrupts light penetration through the water.

Ely, Minnesota offers some of the best lakes in the region for walleye fishing and topping the list is the White Iron Chain of Lakes. The chain of lakes has thousands of acres of water and direct access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The opportunities for walleye fishing are endless. Anglers can fish by motorized boat on four interconnected lakes or by canoe on the North Kawishiwi River. One of the four interconnected lakes is located in the Boundary Waters, but does allow motorized boats with the appropriate days use motor permit.

Permits are available and it is recommended they be reserved in advance for motorized day trips. For day trips by canoe into the Boundary Waters Canoes Area Wilderness you need a day pass which is free and no advance reservations are needed. Overnight canoe trips are also a great way to experience fishing for walleye and other species. For more information about an overnight Boundary Waters trip checkout our outfitting website at
